My family has recently started a “Scripture of the Week” frame and I love it. Not just the frame itself but the whole concept of having a scripture for the week. What we do is someone picks a verse from the Bible, it gets written down and we study the verse together. We talk about what it means and what we learn from it. Throughout the week we take the time to go over it and memorize the verse. Anyway, I wanted to share this week’s verse with y’all and what I learned.
“I love them that love me, and those that seek me early shall find me.” Proverbs 8:17
As we began studying this verse someone from my family asked- Who is telling us this? WISDOM. Yeah, I know! I thought it was Lord commanding us to seek him. So we began to talk about wisdom and what it was.
• What is wisdom?
-the fear of the Lord
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
• What should we do with wisdom?
-keep his commandments
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” To summarize this verse- be wise and keep his commandments, this is our duty.
• What are the Lord’s commandments for us?
(Apart from the 10 commandments there are many commandments given to us, both in the Old and New Testament, I did not include every single one but here are a few.)
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”
“Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:”
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good;and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
“For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.”
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
So as we saw in Ecclesiastes 12:13 - to complete our duty we must fear God / be wise and keep his commandments. As I studied what wisdom was in Proverbs 9:10, I also saw that it mentioned "understanding". I once read that understanding is wisdom in practice.
"Understanding is wisdom in practice."
We often see that “wisdom” and “understanding” go hand in hand. There’s a good reason for that because if we are understanding it means we are practicing wisdom. So in conclusion, be understanding, be wise, keep his commandments. “...the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” Psalm 19:8
Be wise, friend.
